One of the novelties in this edition of the Maratona is the medal made from a natural material, designed and created by craftsmen from Val Badia
All participants of the Maratona will receive a medal practically hand-made by local valley craftsmen using natural materials, including the must-have ciüf (the local term for flower-flora), the symbol of this edition. The medal is truly a precious object, which goes above and beyond the usual plate used to make it.
Therefore, dear maratona participants, keep it in a safe place, because it is a unique and extremely singular symbol. To make it, 95.402 square metres of compressed hay bedding were used (approximately 500 grams of hay per square metre) with 8.000 daisies, in other words one on each medal and 2.30 cubic metres of swiss stone pine wood in 100-millimetre planks.
The working process followed three steps: the planks of pine were cut and processed at the lathe. The round bar was used to create the individual medals and the edges were rounded by hand. Circles were cut out of the hay bedding with daisies one by one, and in turn they were glued to the pine rounds using natural adhesive.
The stamp with the logo of the Maratona, the word finisher and the date was applied on the back of the medal. Lastly, the medal was perforated in order to thread the cord around it.
A curious fact: the perforation of the medal was the most delicate moment of the entire process since the grain pattern of the pine had to be placed horizontally for drilling otherwise the medal would have split or cracked. It was a tough job but the result is wonderful.
We calculated that for the total processing, it took approximately 410 working hours, totalling 3 minutes per medal.
We must thank Daniel Frenes the project’s creator and supervisor, as well as Malbo, Moling Eduard, Karl Pichler SPA and Organoid Technologies who supported us and produced eight thousand unique, splendid, wonderful medals. Just as splendid as our Dolomites.
Like the medals, the trophy for the Maratona dles Dolomites - Enel 2022 was also made from natural materials.
The square base is made of swiss stone pine wood, the cover of pressed hay, while the daisies are made of wrought iron and then painted.
All strictly handmade by craftsmen from Val Badia.
