Ert - art
An overwhelming impression... primordial rawness.
We need to interpret “thauma”, which for the Greeks meant mixed wonder and a sense of angst when faced with greatness. Homer spoke of thauma when he described Polyphemus, the Cyclops who dismembered and devoured the unfortunate travel companions of Ulysses in the Odyssey. The sight of this legendary Cyclops, a monster with a giant body, created a sense of both amazement and terror. A positive emotion and a negative emotion, Yin and Yang. Why?
The sense of amazement when we look up at a starry sky still represents an intense emotion, re-echoing the ancient wonder that has made its mark on thousands of generations before us. And what work of art could be greater than the Creation, the Earth? Humans have a deep, primordial and innate need to search for an answer to the big questions, to be amazed at things we cannot understand and to become involved in the beauty of something that goes beyond mankind, beyond ourselves. We need to interpret thauma in a great ARTwork.
